During the holidays, we tend to over-eat and enjoy foods that are not particularly healthy for us. People love finger foods, so let’s begin with an appetizer recipe that would add one element of healthier eating.
Spicy Hoisin Glazed Turkey Balls
You will need nonstick spray, 1/4c. red onion (diced), 1/2lb. turkey (ground), 1 egg white slightly beaten, 3T bread crumbs (dried & plain), ¾ t. sesame oil, 1/2t. soy sauce, 1/4t. garlic powder, dash black pepper, ¼ c. hoisin sauce, ¼ t. hot sauce (to taste), juice (1/2 orange), cilantro sprigs (fresh & optional).
Heat oven to 425. Put foil on two baking sheets that have edges and spray with cooking spray. Put water in a small pot and bring to a boil. Add onion and cook for about 1 minute then drain. In a bowl, thoroughly mix together onion, turkey, and next six ingredients. Make teaspoon sized balls and place on cookie sheets. This is a sticky mixture, so wet your hands first. In a small bowl, whisk the hoisin sauce and hot sauce then baste each turkey ball with 1/4t. of the hoisin sauce mixture. Bake for about 6 or 7 minutes. The take them out of the oven and place the oven on broil and place the meatballs back in and broil for about 1 or 2 minutes watching very carefully. Take them out of oven and drizzle the orange juice over, transfer to serving plate, add toothpicks, and serve.
