Backyard Safety 101
Summer is the perfect time to spend long days enjoying your backyard with all of your friends and family. Though you may think that nothing can go wrong while you are at home, there are plenty of potential hazards. Keep these backyard safety tips in mind to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable season.
- Never allow children to go swimming on their own. Even children who have strong swimming skills should be supervised whenever they are around the water. Install a self-locking fence to help keep people out of the pool area when there is no supervision. Make sure that there are no chairs or tables close to the pool to prevent children from climbing over.
- While grilling your favorite BBQ meal this summer, make sure that your grill is placed on a flat, open area away from any buildings, low hanging trees, or other flammable items. Never let children or pets play around a lit grill. If you are using a charcoal grill, make sure that the charcoal is completely extinguished before you throw it away.
- While trampolines can be great exercise and fun for children, they can also be very dangerous. Make sure to limit the number of people allowed on the trampoline at once to help prevent injury. Children should always be supervised while playing on a trampoline.
- Fire pits allow you to enjoy your backyard all year round. When placing your fire pit, make sure that it is far away from any flammable items, including your house, garage, and decks. Never leave a lit fire pit unattended and make sure that it is fully extinguished before you head inside for the night.
