Rental Car Coverage
Renting a car during your summer vacation is one of the best ways to see a new area since it gives you the freedom to tour the location at your own pace. While there are many benefits of renting your own car, there are also some dangers. Getting involved in an accident with your rental car can mean big money out of your pocket. When renting a car, you will have the option to buy a collision damage waiver from the rental company. While this waiver will provide protection, it may be a waste of your money. Your personal auto insurance policy may be able to provide enough coverage for your rental car. Talk with your insurance agent to see if your coverage will be enough to protect you while on the road. Along with your auto insurance policy, your credit card company may also provide coverage if you use your card to rent the car. Make sure to call your company to see how much coverage they provide. Keep in mind that many credit card companies have many exclusions and limitations about their protection, including:
- Generally, only physical damage that is done to your rental vehicle during theft or a collision will be covered. Injuries to you and others involved in the accident will not be covered. Any injury protection will be covered by your existing auto insurance policy.
- Any personal items that are damaged or stolen out of the rental vehicle will most likely be excluded.
- Your credit card may not provide any protection depending on what country you are visiting.
